FAQ

Valanthropy is a compassionate, solutions-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of U.S. military veterans—especially those who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or living on low incomes. Established in 2021 and approved as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2022, Valanthropy was created to help address the growing crisis of veteran homelessness across South Carolina.

Our focus is on developing permanent, affordable housing paired with supportive services so veterans can regain stability, independence, and hope. By partnering with local communities, state leaders, and national veteran support systems, our programs strive to ensure that every veteran—especially those who are disabled or vulnerable—has access to safe housing and a clear path to rebuilding their lives

Valanthropy began when our founder, Fred Altman, recognized the urgent need for sustainable housing solutions for homeless and low-income veterans in the Columbia, SC region. After witnessing the limited availability of affordable housing—particularly for disabled veterans—Fred took action.

He founded Valanthropy to close this gap by creating a long-term housing model specifically designed for veterans experiencing homelessness. Fred later collaborated with Tom Lash, a Marine Corps Vietnam-era veteran and retired executive with decades of success supporting veterans transitioning from service to civilian employment. Together, they shaped a mission-driven organization with a clear goal: to build lasting housing and support programs that truly meet the needs of South Carolina veterans.

VISION

To develop permanent, supportive housing that helps homeless and near-homeless veterans build stable, fulfilling lives. We aim to empower veterans with dignity, opportunity, and a safe place to call home.

MISSION

Working collaboratively with individuals, businesses, churches, civic groups, and government partners, Valanthropy provides affordable, durable, permanent housing for veterans experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. We focus on long-term solutions that support stability, recovery, and meaningful reintegration into the community.

Valanthropy is small, nimble, and community-based, allowing us to quickly adapt and deliver targeted solutions where they are needed most. Unlike organizations focused on short-term shelter or crisis intervention, Valanthropy’s approach centers on long-term permanent supportive housing that fosters lasting stability.

We work exclusively with veterans who lack access to adequate housing and who often fall through the gaps between larger programs. Our partnership-driven model allows us to combine local support, private-sector relationships, and federal resources—including the Veterans Administration—into a single, effective housing solution. Every project is built around sustainability, accountability, and the dignity of the veterans we serve.

No, they do not. Unlike many organizations that are top-heavy with exorbitant salaries and expenses, Valanthropy currently has no paid employees. We are incredibly blessed and grateful for our volunteers.No. Unlike many nonprofit organizations, Valanthropy’s leadership team does not receive salaries or compensation. Our directors volunteer their time, expertise, and personal commitment to the mission. This ensures that donations and community support go directly toward programs that help veterans.

We are currently developing land and preparing for upcoming housing projects across South Carolina. Each project includes permanent, durable housing units tailored to the needs of homeless and disabled veterans. After housing is established, we will expand into additional services such as resource coordination, employment pathways, and supportive programs that improve quality of life.

As we grow, every completed project will act as a model for future developments—scalable, sustainable, and replicable across the state.
